say "miserable!"

I am always over the moon excited for holiday card season to begin. We have this little tradition that started years ago where my dad will take our family photos for our cards and then I will take theirs. It's become some ritual switch-off that we've all grown accustomed to but this year? This year it was a disaster in the making. I mean, it didn't start off as a disaster. No one was sick, which was a stark improvement from Ethan's snot-nosed, glassy-eyed disaster last year. Even so, last year's pictures were infinitely cuter. And easier. Maybe it's because Ethan was still tiny and hadn't yet discovered he had the ability to troll us all by snarling in each photo that he agreed to actually sit for. Still, going into this thing, I was so excited. We bought new shirts. I got a fantastic new haircut. Things were looking good until we got there and they just weren't. I tossed some ideas to my dad only to be met with a "hey, I've been taking pictures of fish for a magazine since before you were born." Oddly, that didn't do much to reassure me.

Check out the pure misery written on that kid's face, right? I got home, flipped through our photos and cried until I couldn't help but laugh. Because they were awesome in a totally awful way. This year, the outtakes outnumbered the even remotely decent photos. After some initial panic (and by the skin of our teeth), our holiday card was still created and I could go back to finding humor in these outtakes. Because, my friends, they're ridiculously bad.

We'll kick things off with a "dad, get a picture of us from the waist-down swinging Ethan."

Nailed it.

It, my friends, was all downhill from there.

I was initially begged to put that last one on our holiday cards as a joke and I came thisclose. It's too much of a gem to just forget about, though. Erin Condren 2014 planner photo, anyone?

So how about my parents photos for their card? They were better, but not by much.

All we can do is hope for better for next year. Or lower our expectations. Or, novel concept, hire a professional photographer.

  1. Haha, i think your first one is cute! kids are funny in posed pictures because they either have this overly cheesy grin or they look angry. I'm planning on doing our picture soon, I just need a matching outfit with Anna because the Iggys already have one lol

  3. Stop it... the one where he's ripping Aaron's glasses off. That right there is definitely the winner.

Bahahaha, that is a close contender for Erin Condren Planner 2014, too.

Aww, thanks, Stephanie! I was super stoked about my new haircut that I got the night before photos and, well, Ethan had other plans than letting me gloat about it, haha.

I did! I got it last May. Here are some photos and the story:

Haha, right?! Ethan does this snarl whenever he fake smiles. I was hoping having my sister -- aka his Favorite Person Ever -- present would make him laugh but he had other plans.

I can't wait to see your picture!

  7. I have been taking pictures of fish well before you were born, and I never had a fish ask me to just take a picture of its tail swimming away! So, why just Ethan's legs? Love Dad.
