Last week I introduced our new postcard corner, which is one of the two new areas in our tot school classroom. The other new addition is our Book of the Week bin. Prior to introducing each new theme, I go to the library and fill the bin with books that accompany what we're learning about. By stretching each theme over two weeks, it gives Ethan and I the opportunity to talk about what he knows about each theme before we begin, what he wants to know and what he has learned (and it gives me time to fill the bin with books that cater to those interests he asks about!).
The titles in our ocean theme book bin are:
A HOUSE FOR HERMIT CRAB by Eric Carle
MY OCTOPUS ARMS by Keith Baker
FISH EYES by Lois Ehlert
FISH IS FISH by Leo Lionni
THE POUT POUT FISH GOES TO SCHOOL by Deborah Diesen
After we read each book, Ethan gets to take one of these cards and write and illustrate his favorite part of the story. We have been working a lot on writing sentences -- or at least writing the letters in a line -- and this has been wonderful practice for Ethan. Most times, he has so many favorite parts of each story, he fills these cards out a couple of times for each book.
