pressing on.

And so our old pal the nebulizer is back. Luckily, Ethan is getting used to it by now, which a plus -- although it doesn't mean he likes it. It just means there are things he hates more than the nebulizer, like having his nails trimmed or not being able to eat my Blackberry. The official diagnosis is one I've also come to know well, which is just that he can't recover from quick colds as quickly because of the RSV he contracted in November. The virus wasn't kind to his born-at-36-weeks lungs and so he needs a little help conquering the common cold which ends up getting into his lungs and turning into a week long wheeze even after the cold has long since dissipated.

The week long wheeze is met with a week long isolation in which we both go a bit stir crazy trying to keep ourselves entertained in the house. There are marathon storytimes in the glider and dance parties in the living room. There are naptimes in which I fully admit to climbing into my bed with him and snuggling up close while sleep sets in and there are wake-ups to little fingers brushing against my cheek and a tiny smile on the face of the little boy sharing my pillow.

And there is also fingerpainting. Sometimes when you get a little too stir-crazy, you think laying down plates of red paint in front of your precocious 7 1/2 month old is a fabulous idea. In a way it is because we sure did produce a slew of sweet Valentines for family -- but then you realize while standing in the check-out line at Whole Foods later that night that you have red paint all over your pants and in your ear and the inside of your elbow and god knows where else. It doesn't seem like that great of an idea once you notice everyone giving you the side-eye as you as you throw a bag of carrots into your shopping cart.

Sometimes I think these nebulizer treatments are way worse for my husband and I than they are for Ethan, who gets to sleep through most of them. Case in point: this post is brought to you solely due to the fact that my husband took one for the team and voluntarily did Ethan's 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. treatments so I could sleep through the night. Did I mention I have the best husband ever?

Despite the exhaustion and greasy hair (no? Just me?) and stray red paint and the overall madness of being stuck inside our house without a reprieve other than the pediatrician's office, we've been surviving. And maybe even having fun. As long as he's smiling, I'm smiling. And as long as I can spin him in the air and kiss his slobbery cheeks and get completely soaked as he splashes around in the tub, we'll be smiling and pressing on.

  1. That stinks about the nebulizer, hopefully it will resolve soon. On the bright side, your Valentine's are awesome. What a great idea, I don't know if I am brave enough to attempt it! LOL!

  2. Oh, I feel so bad! Our little baby (who is the same age as your son, btw) just contracted his first cold, which then turned quickly into a double ear infection. Not quite as bad as having to use a nebulizer, but I feel a little bit of your pain! Keep up the great work!
