with maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank

The weather is so absolutely gorgeous here in South Florida. It is cool, with highs of 73 degrees in the dead of the afternoon. It is breezy, with gusts of wind blowing your hair and making you reach for your sweater. Your sweater. Mine has been sitting in my closet idly, next to my 'NSync concert tour 1998 souvenir t-shirt and other things that have absolutely no use. I pulled it out of my closet today nearly a year after I've worn it last.

Today temperatures dropped to the 50's. Ethan and I bundled up and went on a 6.8 mile walk.

Tomorrow, they're predicting, temperatures will reach a low of 48 degrees. I can't really imagine weather so frigid nor can I recall another time when Halloween was so cold. Heck, I can't recall a time when it was anything but altogether hot. One year my mother passed on the candy and handed out bottled water to the sweaty trick-or-treaters. It was brutal that year to live in the house that handed out water instead of sugar and chocolate, but the mother in me appreciates the gesture now. Who really needs all that sugar anyway?

Just last year, I whined about the heat on Halloween and how it ruined Ethan's Fonz costume, the leather jacket not lending itself well to weather so hot you're sure your skin is melting clear off. Of course, this year it's freezing for the first time in I don't know how long and my poor son's costume is sans pants. Go figure.

Still, the weather has been such a welcome change from the painful, brutal heat and we've been soaking it all up, spending as much time outdoors as possible.

This is perfect outdoors weather. Perfect chase daddy around the backyard weather. Perfect barbecue and eating dinner at Ethan's picnic table weather.

More than all that, it's been perfect pumpkin carving weather. Finally. Better late than never -- or maybe we can say we were just waiting for the glorious, dreamlike change of weather?

It's crazy what a difference a year can make, in more ways than just the weather. Someone teach me how to pause time? Just for a minute, maybe, to take it all in before it goes.

    1. Thank you! I love those chunky baby thighs. Already I can see him thinning out a little bit and I think I'll cry when those leg rolls are one day gone! The time does go so quickly.

  2. I think you are a fantastic Mother- none of this is "showy" or "look at me". You really do a great job of documenting and being a Mom. You make me want to do better. Thank you.

    1. Oh, "showy moms" make my skin crawl. We run into our fair share of them on a daily basis and it upsets me so much how someone can turn something sweet and innocent like CHILDHOOD into some competitive, snotty thing.

Thank you, Lindsay. <3 That means a lot! And, trust me, you are an AWESOME mom. O&G have it awesome!

    1. Crazy, right?! Hard to believe it's already his 2nd Halloween! He was 4 months old last time and now he's a big boy who can trick-or-treat like a pro! INSANE.

      LOL! You totally should.

  5. Lindsey- I'm sure that you are all having a great time, regardless of the weather. I love seeing what you guys are up too and enjoy your great photos too. Buy the way, your mom is brilliant! I just asked my husband for water as I nauseous from chomping on Halloween candy as we've been cooped up inside for the past few days. Water on Halloween is amazing.

    1. Luckily it "warmed up" to the mid-60's by this afternoon, so it's nice and cool!

See, I guess she was onto something! I remember being teased that year about how everyone should skip our house because there was only WATER, but it does seem like a good idea now, right?!

  6. Growing up in Chicago I remember my mom making my Halloween costume for school but it also had to be big enough to put over my winter coat for trick or treating! Here in Texas, I have a monkey costume for LK and I have a feeling he won't be in it long b/c it will be too hot!

    1. Oh no! No mysterious cold fronts over in Texas? I'm in shock by how cool it is here in Florida for Halloween. It's typically not Halloween here until you're sweating and Christmstime = time for shorts and flip-flops! It's catching me by surprise! I bet LK will look way cute in the monkey costume!!

    1. He used a stencil I printed off the internet but he was sweating from working so hard on it! Apparently it was a very difficult stencil and he was scared the whole pumpkin would cave in. Still, a success! Hooray!

      Thank you!
